The Daily K9: Gill Hornby is an Idiot, Dog Food Scare & Chicken Helps Dog

A labradoodle is for idiots, not for presidents, Barack Obama: I was a passionate Obama supporter from the start. Just as he asked, I did everything to mobilise the grassroots in my neighbourhood (west Berkshire).”Yeah, he’s a mutt like me: a labradoodle.” What do you get when you cross a bulldog with a shitzu? Exactly. You are what you walk, even if it is in the White House grounds with a dozen secret service agents.

A Portuguese Water dog is a cool dog: bred to herd fish, a strong sea swimmer with a distinguished front crawl. A labra… I can’t say it again… is not a mutt; it’s a mongrel with pretensions and a name to curdle your marrow. We need a dog we can believe in. Mr President, spare us the labradoodle.

The Daily K9: Sorry, say that again Gill, only this time try and take your hooves out of your mouth when you speak. What a lot of nonsensical, dog snobbery of the very lowest order.

Australian dog food pulled from Chinese stores in health scare: A brand of imported pet food is being pulled off store shelves in China after reports of dogs being sickened by it, a company official said Tuesday. Natural Pet Corporation, which is the distributor for Optima dog food from Australia, has ordered a recall, according to Zhang Haobin, the company’s general manager in Shanghai. Reports of sick animals have been coming into Edis Pet Supply Company in Shanghai, a retailer selling Optima dog food, a company representative said.

Fears of a dog ‘gestapo’ unfounded, says council: Dog owners in Wychavon have been assured a “gestapo” would not be set up to snoop on them if tough new dog control orders are brought into force. Wychavon’s district councillors said responsible dog owners have nothing to fear from proposed guidelines which suggest allowing your dog to walk off its lead in public places in Wychavon could potentially result in a prosecution and £1,000 fine. Under the planned dog control orders, which fall under the Clean Neighbourhoods and Environment Act (2005) and were discussed by Wychavon’s executive board on Tuesday night, dogs would be banned from all enclosed children’s play areas.

The Daily K9: Is it just me or can anyone else smell a rising of anti-dog owner sentiment and legislation in the UK?

Wee dog nearly killed by Wii remote: A wee dog is lucky to be alive after a run in with a Wii remote in Marquette, Michigan. Ozzy, a five-month-old miniature Sheltie, was watching his owners play with their new Nintendo Wii console when he was accidentally hit with one of the game’s remote controllers. “We had just got the Wii for Christmas,” explained owner Kathy White, “so we were trying it out, and that’s when Alexis and I were bowling and Ozzy was standing by me and he jumped up and I hit him in the temple and killed him instantly.”

Chicken helps dog raise puppies: A hen in China has reportedly shacked up with a dog to help raise its three newborn puppies. Owner Yang, of Anqian village in Fuqing, said the hen moved into the dog’s kennel after it gave birth last month, reports Southeast Express. Since then, the hen refuses to leave the kennel, staying inside all day and only walking out when the dog is nursing its puppies. Yang says the hen is very protective of the puppies and refuses to allow strangers to come close to the kennel. “Quite possibly the hen is envious of the dog because it has no offspring of its own, and so it is trying to take over the puppies,” he said.

Seven Years Bad Luck Keeps Dog at Shelter: Honey the dog is just as sweet as her name implies, yet she has remained shelter-bound for nearly seven years. She’s only one of millions whose minor quirks — whether behavioral or medical — keep them waiting endlessly for someone to take them home. While animal shelters are designed to serve as rest stops for its residents, not all animals who walk through a shelter’s door are able to walk right back out.

Sale of ‘sick animals’ continues: An Essex puppy trader is still selling sick and dying animals despite a court order banning her from doing so, a BBC Inside Out investigation has revealed. The landmark case was brought by Essex Trading Standards in 2004. It bound Loretta Bastin and those acting for her not to sell puppies of an unsatisfactory quality. However, puppies from her premises continue to be found to suffer from a range of problems including the lethal and highly infectious parvo virus.

Obese dog diets to get in shape: A dog so obese he is unable to walk has been being placed on an extreme low-fat diet by vets. Patch weighed 28kg when he was brought in to the Dogs Trust centre in Glasgow just before Christmas after his owner passed away.
