Golden Retriever, Caesar, an assistance dog from Dogs for the Disabled, and his wheelchair using partner, Wendy Morrell, visited the Metropolitan Police Specialist Training Centre in Gravesend in December to witness the officers receiving commendations for their work and thank the Police Officers who had ensured their safety during the Olympic Torch Relay earlier in the year.

The presentations were made by Commander Robert Broadhurst, responsible for Public Order, New Scotland Yard and Her Excellency Madam Fu Ying, Chinese Ambassador to the United Kingdom.

Wendy had been selected from thousands of entries to be a “Samsung Better Life Hero” for her courage in overcoming the effects of a serious sporting accident and her voluntary work in the fields of disability and assistance dogs, and her prize was the honour of carrying the Olympic Torch in London, and a visit to China to watch the Torch Relay there.

Wendy said, “On the day, we had a few challenges, not least it snowed overnight and was really cold, there were demonstrations and a lot of noise and commotion, but Caesar was undaunted, a real testament to his training and social skills, he carried out his duty of accompanying me with the Olympic Torch exceedingly well and was completely unperturbed by it all all”

She continued “It really was a pleasure to meet the Officers personally who had helped ensure our safety on the day and who went out of their way to assist us and put us at our ease in very trying circumstances. In spite of the difficulties, carrying the Olympic Torch in our capital city was a tremendous honour and I was delighted that Caesar, who is so much a part of my life as my assistance dog, was able to assist me that day also.”
