President Obama Narrows White House Dog Search to Two Breeds
US President-elect Barack Obama has some tough decisions to make as it takes over the hot seat at a time when the economy’s in the pan, war is raging in the Middle East and millions of Americans face up to the threat of losing their jobs.
However one decision which has been on the burner ever since Obama swept to victory in the Presidential race has just gotten a little bit easier.
The White House’s next dog will either by a Labradoodle or a Portugese Water Dog.
He told ABC News that the family would be adopting the dog from shelter (well done Mr Obama, great move!) and that the allergies of his children meant they were optining for a so-called ‘hypoallergenic’ type of dog.
The Labradoodle is a relatively new kid on the block as dog breeds go with many people still – mistakenly – referring to them as a ‘designer crossbreed’. The breed has been developing a popular following as a result of its minimal shedding.
The Portuguese Water Dog is a fairly rare breed; only 15 entrants for Portuguese Water Dogs were made to 2002’s Crufts, although their personality and non-shedding qualities have made them more popular in recent years.

A caring person goes to a shelter and rescues an animal. Plus, if children are allergic, why not a get a few goldfish instead.

I have two labradoodles and we have met more than our share of PWD's. They are both great dogs, but doodles have more personality. PWD's always seem serious. Doodles are goofy, like living muppets. My doodles LOVE children, I'm not sure about PWDs. I have an F1 (3.5 YO girl) and an F1B (1.3 YO boy), and they are both different, but complement each other very well. I hope they have puppies this spring, if they want to. Regardless, with both dog types, the Obamas need to understand that both of these dog types need jobs that exert energy. We live on Lake Champlain and my dogs jobs are to clean the lake of all floating sticks, when its not frozen, of course. So they get winters off. It think it may be difficult to find either of these dogs in a shelter without behavorial issues… they are so influential at a young age, and they haven't figured out their jobs yet! I can't see how either would have a chance in the white house. Personally, I don't recommend either dog unless it is pretrained, because Bar and Mich won't have time for it. And the the poor dog won't know where its master is.
