Appeal For Grossly Obsese Dog Who Weighs as Much as a Child

Meet Patch, a six year old Beagle Cross recently brought to Dogs Trust Glasgow. He weighs a whopping 4.5 stones (28.45kg), the average weight of a six year old child.

Rehoming centre staff are desperately hoping 2009 will see him shed almost half his bodyweight to reach his goal of 2.4 stone (15kg), but the path won’t be easy. Patch is so obese he cannot even walk, let alone run the pounds off.

Poor Patch: Obesity is canine killer

Brought to the Uddingston centre when his elderly owner died, the dog even needs a harness to be lifted. At the moment any exercise could be extremely dangerous.

Dogs Trust Veterinary Director Chris Laurence explains:

“Patch has started a special diet and he must lose weight before he can attempt any exercise. If he loses weight too quickly there is a real risk of organ failure.

He is very lucky he is now in our care. Being grossly obese puts him at risk of heart failure, diabetes, liver disease, pancreatitis and arthritis. The simple physical strain of carrying that much additional weight on his frame would be huge.”

His weight loss will take months and staff and locals are rallying round to help him. Local kennels Allers Farm has offered him free use of their brand new hydrotherapy pool, while staff members are finding him extra layers of bedding to make his stay more comfortable.

Victoria Kelly, Supporter Relations Officer at the centre, adds:

“Patch is such an adorable dog with a loving personality. He needs caring but responsible new owners who can resist those big brown eyes pleading for treats and will take a tough love approach to ensure his weight loss.

He is available for rehoming now and our staff will be available at all times to offer new owners support and advice. We will also cover the cost of any treatment needed for his weight loss.”

If you are interested in rehoming Patch please call Dogs Trust Glasgow on 0141 773 5130.
