The Dark Side Of Dog Breeding Uncovered

On 16th December 2008, TV channel Y Byd Ar Bedwaraired a damning programme about licensed Puppy Farms operating in Carmarthenshire, Wales.

Reporter Sian Morgan, with support from anti-puppy farming campaign group, “Puppy Love,” went undercover to discover if dogs are being bred under illegal conditions.

Wearing secret film equipment, Sian managed to capture videos of some dogs without access to water whilst others had access to contaminated water but had no bedding.

There was disturbing evidence of dogs suffering with stress disorder, running around in circles.

Food was strewn on kennel floors among faeces. Some needed veterinary attention for open untreated sores and breathing problems. Dogs were overcrowded with nothing to suggest the Animal Welfare Act was being adhered to. A vet who was shown the footage was visibly upset on camera and stated that what she saw was cruel and illegal .

Despite being the main two dog welfare organisations, attempts to get interest in this issue from both the RSPCA and The Dogs Trust have so far fallen short. This, despite the overwhelmingly fraught state of the poor hapless breeding bitches and their puppies that are being bred merely to make ‘instant puppies’ available through third party dealers.

An update from Y Byd Ar Bedwar was aired on 6th January 2009 in which a representative from Carmarthenshire County Council stated no action would be taken against the breeders and that they were operating quite legally. This suggests that all is well despite film showing the contrary.

A spokesperson for Puppy Love said:

“We are not at all surprised at what we uncovered niether are we shocked that the Council , RSPCA and others seem to continually ignore what is going on. The animal welfare act was meant to help all animals, to date it fails the ones who have suffered for decades and it would seem they must suffer for decades to come ? Shame on us all for allowing this to continue. Carmarthen council is a disgrace to a beautiful country to condone this treatment of mans best friend”.
