RSPCA Commended For Breed Specific Legislation Stance
The RSPCA has won plaudits from around the world for its public call for a repeal of section 1 of the Dangerous Dogs Act – the part that bans dogs based on what they look like.
Dave Holden, vice chair of the National Dog Warden Association said:
As the Vice Chairman of the National Dog Warden Association I would like to congratulate the RSPCA on this announcement. The NDWA has been publically anti BSL from the beginning. I hope that some of the other large organisations now join with DDAWatch, C-fidos, NDWA and RSPCA to bring about the early repeal of Section 1. Well done to all concerned.
From the USA:
Gives the words ‘Happy New Year’ a whole new meaning. Keep your paws crossed that other UK animal welfare orgs will be inspired to join the RSPCA in this statement.
I think I am in shock over the good fortune coming to our bullie friends in the UK. Such good news!
From Australia:
That is very exciting news. I can only hope that this eventually constitutes a catalyst for lasting change to BSL.
Wow – that’s pretty big!!!!
this is great news, hopefully things will start to change here
At last a modicum of sweet sanity – GO RSPCA UK and let the rest of the world fall in behind (quickly as you can)
Further to the public congratulations to the RSPCA move, emails have been steadily flowing from people who now have something to cling to and can see that they are not on their own in understanding the flaws in BSL as a concept.
For their part the RSPCA is keen to stress its point further. A spokesperson for the organisation told us:
“The focus must be on the deed and not the breed of the animal and enforcement of the law should be made as simple and effective as possible to ensure that local authorities and police services take action.
Section 1 of the Dangerous Dogs Act 1991 has had little effect to stem the number of prohibited dogs in the country and many experts believe there are more in the UK now than in the late 1980s and early 1990s.
The RSPCA is working with politicians to encourage support for such an approach to legislation and hopes in the long-term to be successful in this tact.”
Many will agree, this positive news is a great way to start the new year and let’s hope we can cite 2009 as the year when the legislators and major animal organisations worked together to put an end to the barbaric practice of state controlled killing and seizure of dogs based on nothing more than their size and shape – a practice which has not only cost the tax payer millions of pounds but has NOT reduced the number of dog attacks or improved the safety of the general public at all.

This is a quote direct from the RSPCA´s own website.
[The RSPCA have been concerned about dangerous dogs used in dog fighting for many years.
Recent high profile investigations with the Police and seizure´s of such dogs has shown that there has been an increase in the ownership of dogs which are not legally kept.
This poses the question of whether the provisions of the Dangerous Dogs Act 1991 are adequate and ´WHY´ are people keeping such dogs ?].
NOW call me naive if you wish to do so…but isn´t this a bit of a turnaround for them given having read this on their website!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.

Kris it is iall about enforcement, you have the law-abiding who have family pets, and you have the
Dog-fighters who have objects or weapons they create out of these poor animals, this type of SCUM
are not interested in any laws. The DDA of 91 does not discrimate it merely states "MURDER ALL
PITBULLS" so a council and there police have a choice to either go after the law-abiding ,which is much easier and definitely much safer for them than going after the Dog-fighters who are generally
the Drug-Dealer's involved in many other spheres of Criminality and are ARMED.It is very much
a cowardly approach by some of the police forces, and even the magistrates who hand down these laughable sentences ,2 months suspended for running a dog-fighting ring.In the states sentences
of 10 and 15 years ar being handed down which will impact on these SCUM.
Once again RSPCA CONGRATULATIONS on having the Courage to go Public.,and helping get
this EVIL act "HITLER'S BSL ABOLIHED once and for all.

I have to say that the RSPCA was one of the main supporter for the DDA and have spent many hours attending the court cases of siezed dogs since its being passed.
I am glad that they have finally realised that this legislation was knee jerk and badly done.

Well done to those who will simply stand up and say yes this law does need to be repealed! The more groups that support a repeal the stronger the message. The campaign for change is so very important and I hope people unite to make this happen.
