Actress Defends Dog Fighter Michael Vick

US actress Whoopi Goldberg has publicly put forward a view that dog fighter Michael Vick may have turned to the ’sport’ due to his ‘cultrual upbringing’

The star of films such as Sister Act and Ghost, speaking on US chat show ‘The View’ had this to say:

“He’s from the South, from the Deep South … This is part of his cultural upbringing,”
“For a lot of people, dogs are sport,” Goldberg said on the show. “Instead of just saying (Vick) is a beast and he’s a monster, this is a kid who comes from a culture where this is not questioned.”

Whoopi, hate to say this but you couldn’t be more wrong.

Michael Vick executed dogs, profited from them and enjoyed watching them fight to the death.

I for one am more than happy to ignore your advice and call him a monster.

I couldn’t care less what his upbringing was and taking that logic to it’s natural conclusion is very, very risky ground if we are to excuse people for cruel, criminal acts because ‘it’s part of their culture and upbringing’. Shame on you Ms Goldberg.

Re Goldberg “Defence of Sicko-Vicko”—Long time since I’ve read such indefensible “cultural” codswallop. Mz Goldberg earned herself no kudos for that garbage and its perpetrator!

I have never heard such rot in all my life. Vick has been raised in the 20th/21st centuries, not back in 1860 when many issues were legal and which ARE NOT legal today. There has never been, nor ever will be an acceptance for the cruelty he has suffered on dogs despite his place of birth, nor his cultural background. Ms Goldberg has tried to use her dwindling star staus influence, for what reason I do not know or care. If this is her take on cruelty, what else rattles around in her brain – a good example of what Hollywood does to people. Too much money and no common sense of what is good or bad.

What Ms Goldberg fails to mention is that lynching used to be the sport of choice in the south. I don’t recall ever hearing a similiar explanation for that coming from her lips. Ms. Goldberg is living in a dream and defending Michael Vick is inexcusable!

You know what’s funny? I read the link about the “actress” who was defending Michael Vick, and I was wondering who it was, and Whoopi Goldberg’s name popped right into my head. One click confirmed my gut reaction! I have listened to her garbage before and she is just plain ignorant.

The point is, one cannot be excused from something simply because he/she was exposed to it as a child. We do not excuse rapists who were sexually abused, nor do we excuse murderers who saw their father beat their mother. I know plenty of people who had a rough childhood that did not continue the cycle–I don’t care if you saw a million people killed growing up, we still know it’s wrong, if we’re human. I’m sure it was “cultural” for Vick, but it doesn’t excuse it in the least. He’s not a child, he’s an adult, and ANYONE who can take a little pit puppy (we all know how little pit puppies are just wagging their tails off at you, with those beautiful eyes, just licking any human that comes close) and use it as bait, knock its teeth out so it can breed, or fight it to the death, and when it doesn’t win, electrocute or hang the animal to death, all with these dogs just wanting to love and worship you, there is NO excuse. May hell’s true fury come down on this man, and I wish he would man up and try to help the dogs he murdered and traumatized. He should give every cent of his money and time to helping abused dogs, if he has truly changed. If not, well I truly believe in vigilantism then.

Whoopie Goldberg has just insulted a large portion of her race and this United States.

I am from Texas, that’s southern culture. I am familiar with Dog Fighting and I abhore it with my whole soul. Her comments about Dog Fighting being ’southern culture’ is totally wrong headed. Dog Fighters come in all colors and regions. They are in it for money, drugs, gambling, alcohol and illegal weapons. And there are just as many Dog Fighters in Chicago, New York and California.

For over a century, the black south has been climbing out of poverty and squallor. Through education, hard work and yes, sport endeavors, they have succeded admirably. There are still a few that cling to the old horrendous ways but of the whole they are well above them, as are whites in the south.

Yet, here, one of the most successful young black men of his generation has sunk to the depravity of the worst of our forefathers. To excuse his actions on the basis of ’southern culture’ is not only laughable its downright insulting.

So Whoopie, how many southerners do you know? Are some of your best friends southerners? Do they work for you? Do you associate with them even if they are southern?

Why don’t you just stay where you come from, NEW YORK CITY, keep your mouth shut and quite embarrassing yourself and a lot of folks who you obviously don’t know anything about. Any y’all wonder why we still call some of them Yankees!

I live in the US, and, Deb C, being from the South, has really said it
    perfectly, about Vicko, and Goldberg.
What a bunch of trash. It should have been taken out with the rest of the garbage.
I will never allow another NFL game to be watched in my house. Which won’t be too hard, since we are all dog lovers “first.” I also will not be watching the “View” that Goldberg is on.

Thank you, Deb, for a very well written letter. You stated the facts very well.

The 6 above comments have said it all. The only comment I can add is Thank you all.
Shame on the NFL and the Eagles
Shame on Whoopi Goldberg. By her rational, all the serial killers should be excused because nobody hugged them when they were kids.
    Oh Please!

I from the deep south too, but I have NEVER participated in any such “sport” and neither has ANYBODY that I know. Instead of apologies we STILL continue to get excuses for the jerks behavior!! How are we supposed to forgive him and move on when IDIOTS such as Whoopi continue to make statements such as this????

up until these comments i have always been a fan of goldberg. the only thing that i can say that her comments instill in people such as myself who have no knowledge of people from the south is a deep racial hatred and disgust. i have never been racist to any culture but if i were to truely take her comments on board, i would wish for the south to be nuked! for this sort of disgusting behaviour to be excused by a role model for black americans is downright dispicable. luckily we all know that she is talking out of her arse so can and will disregard anything that issues from her in future.
