Invitation to Hike Across Spain in Aid of Abandoned Animals

ADANA is a registered charity and has been looking after abandoned animals for nearly twenty years in the Malaga Province on the Costa del Sol in Southern Spain.

We have found new homes for thousands of pets over the years. The premises on which the current shelter offers a new home to abandoned dogs and cats lacks even elementary facilities like drains, bathrooms and electricity. It is in consequence essential to build a new shelter.

To raise the necessary funds, some twenty dogs from our shelter will depart on a 1250 KM (775 miles) journey from the doors of our shelter to Cape Finisterre, the most north-westerly point of the Iberian Peninsula. This journey will have a major media impact both in Spain as well as abroad. Never have abandoned animals accomplished a journey of that length in aid of their fellow animals.

The journey will commence in March 2008 and will travel along the ancient pilgrimage trail of Saint James, along the Ruta de la Plata, on hiking trails alongside the Spanish-Portuguese border. Along this route, the volunteers who join our dogs will find accommodation in pilgrim’s hostels and refugios (refuge) run by town-halls and brotherhoods.

We want to talk to people who want to partake in this unique expedition which will last some 80 days. Although the dogs will walk the entire distance and volunteers are needed to accompany the dogs, many may not be able to devote that much time. You are invited to join us in part of the route, and we shall provide you with a form to fill in to select the part of our journey. It would be very useful if the volunteers have had previous experience in hiking with dogs, or have knowledge of animal behaviour.

We also invite volunteers to help us in the initial planning of our journey, veterinaries, dog trainers and people with contacts to the media could offer valuable advice. Helping us to establish contacts to possible corporate sponsors would naturally be of great help, and, as this is the first time we try to achieve this, your ideas and suggestions are of great help.
