Possible New Dog Theft Scam?

Dog owners are being asked to keep their eyes open as a possible dog theft scam emerged.

A dog warden has appealed to owners to be extra careful,

Please be advised that I have had a call from a member of the public in Farnborough stating that a gentleman knocked on her door stating that he was from the local council and was there to seize her dogs (St Bernard’s) on a cruelty basis.

The lady asked for ID and the guy just carried on the conversation. The gentleman said that the dogs were neglected and had seen her in the woods beating her two dogs.

The lady was shocked and asked the gentleman to leave, at which point he did. He got into a large white transit van and drove off. He was wearing jeans and a scruffy t-shirt.

The lady then phoned rush moor to complain and obviously have no record of any such person. I have advised her that all council members should produce a photo ID or some other ID proving who they are.

Dog wardens are keen to point our that they will not seize any dog on neglect basis and that owners should never give up their dog to anyone in similar circumstances as the one reported.

If a person calls at your house and claims to be either a council Dog Warden, Animal Welfare Officer or even an RSPCA official, always ask to see their identification. Some council Dog Wardens do wear civilian clothes to do their job but should still have a valid identity card usually with a photograph on it. If they do not have any identity with them ask them what their name is and then ring the council to confirm they are who they say they are. Dont fall for the ‘I must have left it at the office’ trick, tell them to go away to get it and then come back! If you can see the road from where your front door is, check to see that there is a van with the local council logo on it, it might also have DOG WARDEN or ANIMAL WARDEN written on it, RSPCA vans should have the blue and white RSPCA sign on and the RSPCA Inspectors should be in uniform anyway.

At the end of the day Dog Wardens have to carry ID, if they say they have not got any or they ignore your request, be very suspicious of them.
