DANGEROUS DOGS SEMINAR FILLING UP FAST

By Neil Burton

The National Dog Warden Association’s forthcoming 24th annual seminar in Birmingham on the 25th and 26th October 2007 has elicited great interest from Dog Wardens, dog welfare groups, dog professionals as well as ordinary dog owners.

NDWA President Sue Bell said ‘the advert has only been out for little over a week and already fifty percent of the places have been snapped up’.  ‘There are a great range of speakers all who have something important to contribute’ she continued.  ‘NDWA wishes to present both sides of the dog control debate and has invited both Deed Not Breed and the Merseyside Police to speak’ said Mrs Bell.

This year’s seminar has been split into two specific areas, the first day consisting of a range of subjects such as dog control, health and safety working for Dog Wardens and partnership working with the Highways Agency, the Animal Welfare Act, the RSPCA and stray dogs, DEFRA are talking about the date and transfer of responsibility for stray dogs from the police to local authorities and there will even be an Australian perspective of animal control.

Day two is entirely dedicated to dangerous dogs and includes the presentation of the NDWA policy document ‘The Revision of UK Legislation with Regard to the Control of Dogs’ written and presented by Cuthbert Jackson, Deed Not Breed’s Mel Page will be giving DNB’s perspective on dangerous dog legislation.  The Merseyside Police Dog Unit which was involved in the Merseyside Dog Amnesty earlier in the year will be talking about their work during the amnesty.  Steve Elvidge of the Western Australia Rangers Association will also give a presentation on dangerous dog control in Australia.

Renowned dog law expert, Solicitor Trevor Cooper will be discussing dangerous dog legislation as well as talking about his defence of dogs handed in or seized during the Merseyside Dangerous Dog Amnesty.

The seminar is open to not only local government officers and dog welfare groups, but to anybody with an interest in dog control and dangerous dog legislation.
