The UK’s leading animal welfare organisation the RSPCA has spoken to K9 Magazine about the Kennel Club’s recently announced proposal that they (the KC) be given statutory powers on the breeding of all dogs in the UK.
The charity has warmly welcomed the news that the KC intends to review the health issues affecting many breeds but has urged caution on the issue of new legislation being passed which would enable the KC to control all dog breeding activity:
“The RSPCA welcomes the fact that the Kennel Club is reviewing breed standards with dog welfare in mind – it’s great news. And in principle a scheme that makes it easier for members of the public to identify breeders that are adopting best practice and prioritising animal welfare is also a good idea.
“However, there are many aspects of pedigree dog welfare and the reasons why dogs are suffering that still need to be considered before any new legislation is introduced.
For example, we hope that, when complete, our review of the available scientific evidence will be a useful addition to the debate and help ensure all possible solutions can be explored.”

If the KC wants statutory powers it better get itself taken over by the government and made into an accountable government body.
